National Honor Society - Hastings High School Chapter 11487
National Honor Society Logo

The mission of National Honor Society is to promote leadership, to develop student character, to create enthusiasm for scholarship, and to promote service and community involvement.

The National Honor Society is rooted in tradition and service to the community. Members of NHS have the privilege to help develop and implement projects that will help those in need.

We encourage you to type the information on to this document, print it out, get the necessary signatures, and then drop it off in the box outside of Ms. Bezotte's door in the counseling office. Remember, 12 hours are due each quarter (see the school calander for end of quarter dates).

What counts as service? Ask yourself these questions: 1) Am I paid or compensated in any way? 2) Am I working with a population that is truly in need? 3) Is this work associated with membership in another organization? You can not get paid or compensated for volunteer work. You need to work with vulnerable populations. Helping your grandparents with their lawn is not volunteer work (it does, however, mean you are a great grandkid). Babysitting, even if it is w/o pay, does not count. If the work is in any way associated with another HHS activity, it can not be used. This includes, but is not limited to: Youth First Planning Council, Youth First, language honor societies, YIG, etc. When in doubt, send Ms. Marietta an email and she can tell you if the service "counts" for the NHS hour requirement. You can not count more than 10 hours per organization. You can accumulate 30 hours over the summer. Service hour slips are available on the NHS website (http://hs.hastings.k12.mn.us/NHS.html). Be detailed in your description of service and include contact information. We do random calls throughout the semester to verify the hours are in accordance with NHS standards.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF NHS

Character

People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Scholarship

Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.

Abigail Adams

Service

I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

Oprah Winfrey

Leadership

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

John F. Kennedy
