Welcome (Bienvenidos) to the Hastings Spanish Department!
Carlos Jacobsen, Sole Burgess, Rosita Nielsen, Paz O'Brien, Blanca Davis
Although students are in different classes
in our program, we strive to promote consistency throughout the department. We have developed this overview document in an
effort to inform both parents/guardians and students about our purpose and our guidelines. These philosophies and expectations have been developed
to promote learning in a positive environment.
They are upheld and enforced with the students in mind---we want
everyone to succeed, learn and have fun!
Philosophy for Spanish Courses
It is important
that the learners of Hastings develop a greater insight into the Spanish
speaking world as well as into their own community and ultimately themselves.
It is our intent through this curriculum that learners will work towards
proficiency as well as become more aware of other cultures, thereby enhancing
their global perspectives and cross-cultural understanding. In our classes, through the study of the
Spanish language and culture, we strive to:
Promote proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and
writing of Spanish and cultural awareness.
Increase the learners’ communication skills.
Develop the learners’ skill of critical thinking.
Promote collaborative learning.
Foster a sense of humanity and friendship.
Prepare the learners to become citizens at local, national
and international levels.
Develop assets to the learners’ post-secondary study,
professional development and career opportunities.
